Founded in 2012 and officially operating as an independent entity in December 2014, the School of Marine Science and Biotechnology is a key school of science and engineering affiliated to the university. In addition, it is an approved project unit for the Major Talent Program of the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone and has been granted funding by the Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for two consecutive years.Since its establishment, the School has maintained steady development in discipline construction, talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, and social services. Leveraging its regional advantages, it has gradually formed distinctive features and core competitiveness, with its development deeply rooted in the characteristics and needs of the Beibu Gulf region.
Currently, the School offers three undergraduate programs: Biotechnology, Biological Engineering, and Marine Science. In 2020, the Biotechnology program was accredited as a First-Class Undergraduate Program of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In 2021, it was granted two master's degree authorization points: the first-level discipline of Biology and the professional master's degree in Biology and Medicine. The School currently has 1,692 full-time students, including 1,387 undergraduates and 305 master's students.
There are 51 in-service faculty and staff members, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 28 academic master's supervisors, and 31 professional master's supervisors. Among the faculty team, there are 2 Class D High-Level Talents in Guangxi, 1 candidate for the Second Level of Guangxi "Ten-Thousand-Hundred-Thousand Talents Project", 1 Distinguished Scholar in Guangxi, 1 Director of a Provincial Key Laboratory, and 5 leaders of the Xiangsihu Young Scholars Innovation Team. The School also has 1 Provincial-Level Innovation Team and 5 University-Level Innovation Teams, and was awarded the honorary title of "Guangxi Workers' Vanguard" in 2019.
At present, the School possesses 1 Provincial Key Laboratory, 1 International Joint Laboratory, 2 Provincial and Ministerial-Level Engineering Technology Centers, 1 Demonstrative Modern Biological Industry College of Guangxi Universities, 1 Guangxi Institute of Marine Biological Resources Industrialization Technology, 1 Guangxi Graduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education and Joint Training Base, 1 Collaborative Education Center for Applied Biotechnology Innovation Talents, and 1 Strain Collection Center. The total area of the laboratories is approximately 2,500 square meters, and the value of instruments and equipment is about 17 million yuan.
Attaching great importance to teaching reform and practical teaching, the School focuses on fostering students' "Four Abilities" (practical, innovative, employability, and entrepreneurial abilities). It has successively established over 20 off-campus practical education bases with enterprises and institutions inside and outside Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which exert their educational functions by inviting enterprise mentors to guide students' practice and conducting scientific research cooperation.The School actively organizes students to participate in the College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, the China International College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and other academic competitions. Over the past five years, 159 projects under this training program have been approved. In 2024-2025, students won 1 national gold award, 1 national silver award, 8 regional gold awards, 18 regional silver awards and 14 regional bronze awards in the China International College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. They also obtained 2 regional gold awards, 1 regional bronze award and 3 university-level third prizes in the "Challenge Cup" Guangxi College Students' Entrepreneurship Competition, as well as 3 national bronze awards, 3 regional silver awards and 3 regional bronze awards in the 10th National College Students' Life Science Competition.
Over the past three years, the employment rate of the School’s graduates has remained above 90%, with approximately 33% of undergraduate graduates pursuing master’s degrees at universities and research institutes at home and abroad annually. Its talent cultivation quality has been widely recognized by society.
The School actively conducts scientific research. Over the past five years, it has secured 98 research projects at all levels, including 12 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 16 Provincial and Ministerial-Level projects. As the first completing unit, the School won 1 Second Class Guangxi Science and Technology Award (Science and Technology Progress Award) for its research achievements; as a participating unit, it obtained 3 Second Class Awards, 1 Third Class Guangxi Science and Technology Award, 1 Second Class National Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery Harvest Award, and 1 Second Class Fan Li Science and Technology Progress Award of China Society of Fisheries. Additionally, faculty members earned 1 Guangxi Youth Science and Technology Award and 1 Guangxi Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Youth Science and Technology Award. Five research achievements have been successfully transformed, totaling 5.5 million yuan.
The School actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation, having carried out cooperation, personnel visits, lectures, inspections and international conferences with over 10 countries and regions, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States and South Korea. One faculty member was appointed as an overseas part-time doctoral supervisor at Mahasarakham University in Thailand. The School also participates in the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Program for Outstanding Young Scientists from Developing Countries to Visit China and Guangxi’s "100 Outstanding Young Scientists from ASEAN to Visit and Work in Guangxi" Program, having successively attracted 9 foreign young scientists for academic visits.
