School of Marine Sciences and Biotechnology was founded in 2012. Presently, the School has two undergraduate programs (Biotechnology and Marine Sciences) and one master's program designated as the Key Discipline of State Ethnic Affairs Commission in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The teaching and research platforms owned by the School including two Guangxi Key Laboratory Cultivation Bases (Polysaccharide Materials and Modifications, Marine Nature Products and Combinatorial Biosynthesis), Guangxi Colleges and Universities Key Laboratory of Utilization of Microbial and Botanical Resources, Guangxi engineering research center for Liubao Tea, Cooperative Education Center of Guangxi for Creative Talents in Applied Biotechnology, and Demonstration Project of Joint Program Base for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, etc. The School was also designated as Popular Science Education Base of Guangxi.
The School has 25 faculty and staff members, including 15 full-time teachers and 5 auxiliary staffs. Among them, there are 4 professors, 3 associate professors. Twelve personnel of the faculty members got their PhD degrees, with two received from oversea, and two had postdoctoral experiences.
To serve the national and local economic development, the School devoted itself to the field of Marine Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, and Aquatic Biology, etc., and embarked on multiple crosswise and longitudinal tasks funding by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC), and Provincial Key Foundation and Science and Technology Development Project. To cultivate innovative talents, the School implements a cooperative education strategy of industry-education integration and established deep collaboration with well-known domestic enterprises. Aiming at promoting the creativity, practical ability, employability and entrepreneurial ability of our students, the School encourages them to take part in academic research and imparts them expert knowledge from an early start. With these efforts, the School has nurtured many excellent students, and over the years the average employment rate is up to 98%.
The School strives to launch substantive international cooperation and exchange, and the faculty members had carried out joint research projects or participated in academic conferences in USA, UK, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China Taiwan, etc. Distinguished scientists, such as Prof. William B. Whitman (Fellow of American Academy of Microbiology), Yu Li and Xianzhu Xia (Fellows of Chinese Academy of Engineering,) were invited to visit the School. In the summer holidays of 2017，excellent undergraduate and postgraduate students of the School were chosen and sent to National Taiwan Ocean University and UniversityPadjadjaran Indonesia(UNPAD) for short-term exchange. In addition, an international research center for marine biological resources protection and utilization is to be established under the collaboration of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences UNPAD.
