Brief Introduction to the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
The predecessor of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Guangxi Minzu University, specialized in Chemistry was founded in 1960. In 1972, merged with the Mathematics and Physics Subjects to form the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, where the chemistry program was offered as a junior college program. Later, the Department of Chemistry was established in 1978, with the enrollment of undergraduate students majoring in chemistry initiated in 1977. It was renamed the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 1996, and reorganized as the School of Chemistry and Ecological Engineering in 2003. In 2011, it was moved from the Xiangsihu Campus to the Siyuanhu Campus and adopted its current name “School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering”. The school began enrolling undergraduate students in 1977, launched Master's degree education in 2007, and obtained the Doctoral Degree Authorization Program in Chemical Engineering and Technology in 2018. It currently has established a complete talent training system covering undergraduate, master's and doctoral education.
The Party Committee gives full independency and fully supports and promotes the development of schools performance. In 2024, the school was rated as the Category A Demonstration College for the third batch of "all-round education of all students in all processes" comprehensive reform among colleges and universities by the Department of Education of the Autonomous Region. In 2023, the Second Party Branch of the School's Undergraduate Students was selected as a cultivation and establishment unit of the second batch of Model Party Branches for Party Building Work in Guangxi Colleges and Universities in the New Era. The Party Committee of the School has won the honorary titles of "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of the Autonomous Region" in 2016, and "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization among Colleges and Universities in Guangxi" in 2012 and 2016. The Trade Union Branch of the School was awarded the honorary titles of "National Model Staff Family" in 2008 and "Guangxi Workers' Vanguard" in 2018.
The school currently operates with 134 faculty and staff members, including 97 full-time teachers (93 with doctoral degrees, 30 holding professorate senior titles, and 47 with associate senior titles). It has flexibly introduced 4 talents, including 1 academician and 3 renowned experts from Double First-Class universities. There are 26 doctoral supervisors and 94 master's supervisors. A total of 30 teachers has overseas study experience. The faculty includes 3 expert enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, 2 recipients of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 Outstanding Experts of Guangxi, 3 candidates for the second level of the Autonomous Region's "Ten-Thousand Talents Program", 2 Distinguished Teachers in Guangxi Higher Education Institutions, 2 winners of the Guangxi Young Science and Technology Award, 3 recipients of the "Hundred Talents Program" for introducing overseas high-level talents in Guangxi universities, 1 Bagui Young Top Talent, 1 Bagui Scholar in Guangxi universities, 2 Distinguished Scholars in Guangxi universities, 3 Innovation Teams in Guangxi universities, 1 Model Teacher of the Autonomous Region, 3 recipients of the Funding Program for 100 Young and Middle-aged Academic Leaders in Guangxi Universities, 4 recipients of the Funding Program for Outstanding Talents in Guangxi Universities, 1 recipient of the Funding Program for 100 Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers in Guangxi Universities, 1 participant in the Training Program for Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers in Guangxi Higher Education Institutions, and 18 participants in the Cultivation Program for 1,000 Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers in Guangxi Higher Education Institutions. The school has formed a faculty team with high academic qualifications, great development potential and a reasonable age structure.
The school’s laboratory space is of approximately 15,000 square meters, with state-of-the-art instruments and equipments such as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, and scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) valued around 100 million yuan. It boasts a full range of academic teaching and research platforms. Key platforms include: Chemical Engineering and Technology (a First-Class Discipline of Guangxi), the Modern Chemical Industry College (a Demonstrative Modern Industry College of general undergraduate universities in Guangxi), Guangxi Key Laboratory of Forest Products Chemistry and Engineering, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Polysaccharide Materials and Modification, Guangxi Collaborative Innovation Center for Forest Products Chemistry and Engineering, Guangxi Academician Workstation, Key Laboratory of Optic-electric Chemo/Biosensing and Molecular Recognition Education Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomois Region, Guangxi Universities Engineering Research Center for Low-Carbon and High-Value Utilization of Forest Biomass, Autonomous Region-Level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Modern Chemical Processing Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Cultivation and Demonstration Center, and Guangxi University Postgraduate Joint Training Base.
The faculty of the school are dedicated to their duties, fostering virtue through education, and have achieved remarkable results in educational and teaching reforms. In recent years, teachers won 2 first prizes, 10 second prize and 2 third prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards, obtained 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes in the Regional Young Teachers' Teaching Competition; have secured 83 teaching reform projects (including 14 at the provincial-ministerial level and 69 at the departmental level). Faculty members have guided students to win 224 awards in various academic competitions, including 94 at the national level and 130 at the provincial-ministerial level.The average employment rate of graduates over the years (including those admitted to postgraduate programs) has remained above 96%, ranking among the top in the university. The School has been awarded the title of Advanced Collective for Employment Work for five consecutive years.
The faculty of the school uphold innovation, dedicate themselves to scientific research, and serve the society. In recent years, they have won Second Class National Science and Technology Progress Award, First Class Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award, Second Class "8th Liangxi Forestry Science and Technology Award", Second Class Guangxi Technology Invention Award, 4 Third Class Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 7 Third Class Guangxi Natural Science Awards. The school has undertaken 283 various scientific research projects, including 37 at the national level, with a total funding of 49.47 million yuan. It has published more than 790 scientific research papers, 520 of which are included in SCI journals(375 of which are ranked above JCR Q3). Additionally, 7 monographs and textbooks have been published, 133 invention patents have been authorized, and 16 achievements have been transferred. The school has successively carried out industry-university-research cooperation with more than 30 enterprises, such as Guangxi Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Guangxi State Farms Mingyang Biochemical Group, Guangxi Zhongwei New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Guangxi Green City Water Service Co., Ltd., and Guangxi Dinghong Resin Co., Ltd.
