School of Languages & Literature

School of Chinese Languages & Literature, the former Chinese Department of Guangxi College for Nationalities, was founded in 1960.In 2000, the Department of Chinese Languages, the Department of Ethic Languages and Cultures, the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Languages and the Office of Chinese Teaching and Research were merged into one school named School of Chinese Languages and Literature. In 2006, it was renamed to School of Languages and Literature.

In 1960, the School began to enroll undergraduates in the major of  Chinese Languages and Literature. In 1998, it has M.A. programs in Languages and Literature of Ethnic Minorities. In 2010, it has one primary discipline M.A. programs in Chinese languages and literature. In 2013, it offers one primary discipline Ph.D. programs in Chinese languages and literature.

Currently , there are 70 faculty members, including 60 academic staff and 10 office staff in the School. 21 of them are professors and 23 are associate professors. Among them, one enjoys the State Council Special Allowance; one is Guangxi excellent expert ; one is Guangxi special expert ; one is candidate of Guangxi "New Century Ten/Hundred/Thousand Talents Program"( the second-order)9 are supervisors of doctoral candidates; 41 are supervisors of postgraduate candidates.

In the past 57 years, the School total enrollment is more than  10,000 for undergraduates, post graduates and correspondence students. By April 2018, there were 1632 students study here, including 1293 undergraduates, 225 master students and 22 Ph.D. students. Among them, there are 16 overseas undergraduate students, 48 overseas postgraduate students and 28 overseas doctoral students. 24 deferent ethic students hail from all of China. Overseas students come from Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Kampuchea, Burma, Indonesia, Brazil, Poland, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal and other different countries.

The School now incorporates two departments( the department of Chinese Languages and Literature and the department of Languages and Literature of Ethnic Minority) divide into 11 teaching and researching offices. The School offers one primary discipline program for Ph.D.; one primary discipline program for master; 12 secondary discipline programs for master and 4 undergraduate majors. There are 2 distinctive construction centers of the Ministry of Education(Languages and Literature of Ethnic MinoritiesTeaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; one distinctive major of Guangxi ( Chinese Languages & Literature );one Excellent major of Guangxi( Chinese Languages & Literature );one excellent teaching team of Guangxi( Folk Literature ); 6 excellent courses of Guangxi(Writing LiteratureFolk LiteratureAncient Chinese Literature; Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature; Aesthetics Literature and An Introduction to Aesthetics Literature). From 2013 to 2017, 7 books and 22 teaching papers were published. 19 research projects for teaching reform have been undertook, including 12 projects funded by the Ministry of Education or Guangxi government and one national patents; Currently, It has won 4 Guangxi teaching achievement awards.

The School has "Chinese Human Resource Training Center for ASEAN Countries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", "China National Language Translation Bureau Translation Human Resource Training Base" and 2 Guangxi research centers (bases): " Key Base of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Guangxi Universities --- Guangxi National Culture Protection and Inheritance Research Center" and " Ecological Aesthetics and Ethic Culture &Literature &Art Research Base ". From 2013-2017, 77 academic works, 8 texts books and 165 papers of key journals have been published, 38 projects have been funded by the state, the Ministry of Education or Guangxi government, and 106 academic prizes at the provincial level have been awarded, including 3 third prizes . To name a few, one third prizes of the 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award of Humanities and Social Science of Guangxi University for Nationalities; one first prize of the 13th Outstanding Achievement of Award of Social Sciences of Guangxi; and one first prize, one second prize and 3 third prizes of the 14th Outstanding Achievement of Award of Social Sciences of Guangxi.  

From 1986, The School began to offer undergraduate program to international students. In 2008 , Thailand Maha Sarkan University and the School jointly provide M.A. programs. In 2012, professor Dingsheng Yuan, professor Xiaojuan Huang and professor Shuguan Wei were hired as guest supervisors in the major of Chinese Languages and Literature of The School of Foreign Studies of Vietnam Hanoi University. Undergraduates major in Chinese International Education are offered "3+1" multinational human resource cultivation mode. Each year, Volunteers as Chinese teachers are sent to Confucius Institute in Thailand, Indonesia and Laos or overseas Chinese teaching institutions.
    In the process of development , the School is adhere to an ongoing path with its own Characteristic. It gives first priority to writing skill and creative thinking to enhance the humanities literacy of ethnic minority students. It products excellent students and great social influence. "Xiang Si Hu Lake Poetry Circle " ,whose members are mainly from the "writing class", has quite an influence in Guangxi even in China. Many writers, poets and scholars, such as Dongxi, Yiping fan, Peihua Huang, ke Yang, Benzhen Rong, Fang Huang, Changxun Yang and Fenghua Yan, have been invited or hired to give lectures. Gradually, " Xiang Si Hu Lake Writer Circle " is formed and it is spoken highly of by counterparts and readers at home and abroad. All of the writers have become the key members of the " Strategy of Invigorating Guangxi through Culture".
