Introduction to the School of Mathematical Sciences

The School of Mathematical Sciences at Guangxi Minzu University originated from the Mathematics Training Division established in 1960. In 1972, the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry was founded and began enrolling students for a junior college program in Mathematics. Undergraduate enrollment in Mathematics commenced in 1977. The Department of Mathematics was formally established in 1978. It was renamed the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1998. In July 2003, it was restructured into the School of Computer and Information Science, which was later renamed the School of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2006. To strengthen the development of science and engineering disciplines, the university reorganized the former School of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2011, leading to the establishment of the School of Science. It was renamed the School of Mathematics and Physics in January 2020, and finally became the School of Mathematical Sciences in October 2024.

The School currently has 76 faculty and staff members, including 62 full-time teachers, among whom 23 hold senior professional titles. Forty-eight of the full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes one National Advanced Worker in the Education System, one Vice Chairman of a national first-level mathematical society, two experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, two Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers, one Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher, four Guangxi Bagui Scholars, one specially appointed expert of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, one Guangxi Outstanding Expert, two Guangxi Outstanding Youth Fund recipients, five young top-notch talents under the Guangxi Bagui Talent Program, one Guangxi High-level University Innovation Team, and one Guangxi Huang Danian-style Teacher Team.

As of January 2026, the School has 1,463 full-time students, including 1,229 undergraduates and 234 postgraduate students. It comprises four departments: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Public Mathematics, and Basic Mathematics and Physics. The School boasts one National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, 2020), two Autonomous Region-level First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Sites (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science), one Guangxi Characteristic Undergraduate Major (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics), and one Autonomous Region-level "12th Five-Year Plan" Advantageous and Characteristic Key Discipline. It currently has one first-level discipline master's degree authorization point in Mathematics and one first-level professional master's degree authorization point in Applied Statistics.

Mathematics is a first-class discipline in Guangxi and the only mathematics discipline in Guangxi to have been selected for two consecutive rounds as a Guangxi first-class discipline. In November 2025, the mathematics discipline entered the top 500 in the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The School hosts several research platforms, including the Guangxi Applied Mathematics Center, the Guangxi Academician Workstation for Swarm Intelligence Network Optimization and Control, the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Hybrid Computing and IC Design Analysis (co-established with the School of Artificial Intelligence), the Guangxi Collaborative Innovation Center for Ship Networking Technology, the Guangxi University Key Laboratory of Optimal Control and Engineering Computation, the Nanning Engineering Technology Research Center, the Guangxi Applied Mathematics Overseas Intelligence Base, and the Guangxi University Engineering Technology Research Center.

Over the past five years, the School has undertaken over 30 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (including 11 General Program projects) and more than 40 provincial-level fund projects (including 2 Guangxi Outstanding Youth Fund projects, 3 ASEAN Outstanding Youth Fund projects, and 3 Key Program projects). Faculty have published over 400 academic papers in high-level domestic and international journals such as the SIAM series, Science China Mathematics, Izv Math, and the IEEE Trans series. Multiple textbooks have been published. As the primary completing unit, the School has won 5 Second Prizes and 2 Third Prizes of the Guangxi Science and Technology Award.

The School of Mathematical Sciences emphasizes practical teaching, having undertaken several Guangxi Higher Education Teaching Reform Projects and achieving a series of practical teaching outcomes. In recent years, students have achieved excellent results in high-level disciplinary competitions such as the National College Students Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the National College Students Mathematics Competition, the "Tian Jiabing Cup" National Teaching Skills Competition for Normal University Students, and the Autonomous Region-level Teaching Skills Competition for Normal University Students.

After years of development and construction, the School is advancing towards the goal of "high-quality education and 'Double First-Class' construction." Adhering to a development philosophy that equally values fundamental theory and application, and upholding the educational principles of strengthening foundations, broadening scope, emphasizing practice, and creating distinctive features, the School focuses on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and on the needs of social development. All faculty and students, with a stronger sense of responsibility, mission, and urgency, are striving to take new steps in the School's development and jointly compose a new chapter for the School's future.
