Introduction to the School of Physics and Electronic Information
The predecessor of the School of Physics and Electronic Information was the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, founded in 1972. It was separated into the Department of Physics in 1978, renamed the Department of Physics and Electronic Engineering in May 1997, restructured as the School of Electronic and Communication Engineering in July 2003, and renamed again as the School of Physics and Electronic Engineering in April 2008. In November 2011, it was renamed the School of Information Science and Engineering, with the physics discipline transferred to the School of Science. In January 2020, it became the School of Electronic Information. In October 2024, the physics discipline was reintegrated, and the school was reorganized into the School of Physics and Electronic Information.
Currently, the school has 99 faculty and staff members, including 73 full-time teachers, 30 of whom hold senior professional titles and 50 possess doctoral degrees. It comprises 6 departments (offices) and offers 6 undergraduate programs, namely Physics, Electronic Information Engineering, Communication Engineering, Automation, Internet of Things Engineering, and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering. The total number of full-time students stands at 3,076, including 2,890 undergraduates and 186 postgraduates. The school obtained the authorization for the professional master's degree program in Electronic Information in 2018, and the authorization for the first-level academic master's degree program in Physics in 2023, thus forming an integrated undergraduate-postgraduate talent training system.
The school continuously advances the construction of programs and courses. In 2021, the Electronic Information Engineering program was approved as a National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Site. In 2022, the Physics and Automation programs were recognized as Provincial First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites. The school has developed 2 Autonomous Region-level First-class Courses, undertaken 1 Industry-University Cooperation Collaborative Education Project of the Ministry of Education, and over 20 Guangxi Higher Education Teaching Reform Projects, winning 2 University-level Teaching Achievement Awards. It has been honored as one of the first batch of "Three-full Education" Comprehensive Reform Model Schools and Departments among Guangxi universities. Its Party building brand "One Core, Five Chains and Five Classes" won the first prize in the "Integration of Party Building and High-quality Development" Innovative Typical Cases of the education system across the region, and "Three-minute Ideological and Political Education Between Classes" was selected into the first batch of Party Building Innovative Typical Cases of Guangxi universities.
Adhering to the philosophy of "Promoting Learning and Innovation Through Competitions", the school has cultivated students with outstanding innovative and practical abilities. Students have won more than 50 national-level awards and over 400 provincial and ministerial-level awards in academic competitions. They have secured 2 national silver awards and 4 national bronze awards in the China International College Students' Innovation Competition, and nearly 20 gold awards in the Guangxi Division. The school also claimed 1 national second prize in the "Challenge Cup" China College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition. For five consecutive years, it has been rated as an Advanced Collective in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education by the university, and in 2025, it won the first prize in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education and the title of "Advanced Collective in Employment Work".
Responding to the national and regional strategic needs, the school focuses on the frontier interdisciplinary fields such as basic physics theories, precision sensing and embodied intelligence. It has established 6 provincial-level scientific research platforms, including the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Intelligent Language Humanoid Robots, Autonomous Region-level Innovation Consortium and Autonomous Region-level Artificial Intelligence Joint Innovation Center. The school has undertaken 6 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 39 provincial and ministerial-level projects (including 8 Guangxi Major Science and Technology Special Projects). It has 4 "Xiangsihu Young Scholars Innovation Teams", published more than 190 high-level papers, 3 monographs, obtained 44 authorized invention patents, achieved 7 achievements transformations, and won 4 awards from provincial-level industry associations.
Upholding the university motto of "Virtue, Erudition, Harmony and Diversity" and promoting the school motto of "Integrity, Truth-seeking, Diligence and Innovation", the school adheres to the educational philosophy of "Solid Foundation, Strong Practice and Innovation". It is committed to cultivating high-quality interdisciplinary talents with patriotic devotion, solid academic foundation, innovative spirit and practical ability, contributing to serving regional economic and social development, promoting scientific and technological progress and industrial upgrading.
