Guangxi University for Nationalities (GXUN, or Guangxi Minzu University), located by the beautiful Xiangsi Lake in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was founded in 1952 as a branch of the Central Institute for Nationalities (presently known as Minzu University of China).It was renamed Guangxi Provincial Institute for Nationalities in 1953, Guangxi Institute for Nationalities in 1958 and Guangxi University for Nationalities in 2006. Co-financed by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of China and the People’s Government of Guangxi, it is one of the universities prioritized by the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. CPC Leaders and the Central Government of China such as Xi Jinping, Jiang Zemin, Yu Zhengsheng, Wen Jiabao, Zhu De and Chen Yi, as well as leaders from ASEAN countries like Norodom Sihanouk, the late King of Cambodia, Tran Duc Luong, former President of Vietnam, Pham Gia Khiem, former Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, and Bouasone Bouphavanh, former Prime Minister of Lao PDR, have visited the university. Its faculty and student representatives have been interviewed by Chairman Mao Zedong and President Hu Jintao. All these visits and interviews strongly reflect the special status of Guangxi University for Nationalities. With 3 campuses, Guangxi University for Nationalities covers a total area of 3500 Mu .It comprises 26 colleges (including one community-financed college), with a broad range of 11 academic disciplines, namely, philosophy, economics, jurisprudence, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art and medical science. It offers 4 Doctor’s programs and 16 Master’s programs of superordinate disciplines, 75 Master’s programs of secondary disciplines, 11 professional Master’s programs, and 77 full-time undergraduate programs. In addition, one post-doctoral mobile research station and two postdoctoral research centers are affiliated to the university. Guangxi is a model province for national solidarity. With a total enrollment of 19707 students, 50% of which are ethnic minority students, the university is a big family whose members are from 53 ethnic groups, including the Han, Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Hui and Mongols. Over its long course of development, the university has stuck to the motto of “being virtuous and erudite, and seeking harmony in diversity” and has been characterized by“orientation for ethnic solidarity, orientation for the ASEAN countries and orientation for internationalization.” Up to now, around 200,000 students have graduated from the university. GXUN has now developed into a university with an all-inclusive disciplinary system, highly competent faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and ever-increasing quality in talent cultivation and great potentials for development. It has been granted various awards for its outstanding efforts in promoting ethnic solidarity and accelerating cultural and ethical progress.
